SMK Campaigner of the Year 2024 Acceptance Speech
"Tonight, we are honoring Kush for his tangible impact, tireless dedication, and visionary leadership. He has transformed policies to make life more inclusive for disabled people and, in doing so, has made life more inclusive for us all. His success is fueled and guided by his personal experience of disability, and throughout his remarkable career, he has left his mark at every turn. From holding institutions of power to account to taking the lead in grassroots activism, his influence has been profound.
Kush was key in the transformation of London's Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) alongside Inclusion London. His campaigning led to crucial adjustments being made for disabled people, ensuring that a fairer society and cleaner air go hand in hand. From securing exemptions and grants for wheelchair-accessible vehicles to abolishing parking charges for blue badge holders at NHS hospitals (which Kush was telling me was actually a victory claimed by a Conservative administration, even though all the work was his), his achievements are nothing short of monumental.
His advocacy doesn't only reshape institutions or shift decisions; he also campaigns for hearts and minds, challenging perceptions and fostering a more inclusive society for all.” Sue Tibballs, Chief Executive, Sheila McKechnie Foundation
